Take home message: Drinking water beyond thirst can help you modestly decrease energy intake and very slightly increase energy expenditure. However, the total energy is small and without dietary changes and exercise you are very unlikely to see any change in body fat. Also, drinking extreme amounts of water (such as more than a gallon a day) can be dangerous and even result in death.
