The deadlift is the third Strength Performance Level exercise.  Training the deadlift can have a tremendous impact on your full-body strength, posture, metabolism, and sport and daily activities.  It is a very natural and functional movement (how many times per day to you pick something up).  With aging and a sedentary lifestyle,  many people lose flexibility and strength in their hips and the ability to stabilize their backs with resistance (I see it everyday).  Also, you rarely see someone performing a deadlift correctly in the gym.  So many people are missing out on the benefits of this great exercise.
